STEPS YOU DON'T SEE
The wind was howling and the windowpanes rattled and shook.
The power was out and Miranda couldn't find the candles.
There were tornado warnings and she had no basement in the old drafty house..The only thing that she wanted to do was try to find her way upstairs in the dark and get in bed, hiding underneath the covers like a little kid on Halloween night. except it wasn't Halloween night. It would have been a normal Monday evening with the exception of the storm.
Shaking uncontrollably, Miranda thrust her fingers into a drawer in a side table, grasping at air and finally hit pay-dirt - two candles. She grabbed them and turned on her heel and began to run up the stairs but as she did, she lost her footing and began to fall backwards. Grabbing for the rail, she scrambled for her balance, and as she did she felt the two candles break in half.
Feeling as though she were running from the devil himself, she ran as fast as she could, dropping one of the candles as she went, too terrified to stop and try to retrieve it.

As she crossed the threshold of her bedroom, she slammed the door closed behind her and flipped the lock quickly.
Bursting into tears, she began feeling blindly for her nightstand drawer, searching for matches. Even though the candle was broken, she was hoping it would give her some light, some sort of comfort. Suddenly lightening brightened the room....
